Simpson Air is the leading and preferred air charter service for flights into the Mackenzie Mountains and Nahanni National Park. Regularly flying into the Moose Ponds, Island Lakes, Rabbitkettle Lake, Rabbitkettle Gravel Bar and Virginia Falls, we are very familiar with the most popular starting points on the South Nahanni River. We also know many other beautiful spots perfect for camping, hiking, climbing and fishing and hunting. Whatever your dream wilderness experience may be, we can make it a reality!

We also offer flight-seeing day tours of the Nahanni. Our knowledgeable pilots will be your guide as they take you through some of the most beautiful locations in the world. Check out our flight tours page for more information.

Virtually unchanged since the time of the ancient Dene and Nahaa people, enjoy the unique voyage past Hell's Gate and the Funeral Range. View the wonder of the Painted Canyon and look for Dall Sheep, moose, caribou, bear, a host of bird life and various other wildlife. The landscape varies greatly as you wind your way through hot springs, unglaciated land and permafrost areas.

We work with local licensed outfitters who provide guided tours as well as rental gear and equipment. We also provide transportation to private groups for various excursions. Simpson Air staff is knowledgeable and can provide you with expertise advice to help plan your unique adventure. The only way into the Nahanni National Park is by air.

Canoeing & Kayaking

Pristine wilderness and whitewater challenge down the main corridor of the South Nahanni River bring adventure-seekers. Travel through four great canyons, seeing the power and beauty of our natural legacy as the ancient Naha Dehé did. Revel in the mystique of the Yukon Gold Rush and learn tales of headless men and legends of prospectors. Incredible geological formations with fragile tufa and karst caves, alpine tundra and wetlands provide a range of habitat for wildlife. Keep your eyes open for wolves, moose, mountain goats, bears, trumpeter swans and over 180 species of birds.

The river is smooth overall, but there are many challenges as the river is squeezed between steep-walled canyons and meanders past plateaus and hot springs. There can be sections of rapids up to class IV depending on the water level.

You can go on your own (with skills and equipment), or go on a guided trip with a licensed and experienced outfitter. Choose to start at the headwaters or run the lower Nahanni for a shorter trip. The way in is to fly and Simpson Air offers regular air service. Fort Simpson is a great supply point to start this adventure. Contact us for information and reservations.

See the Paddling Map at the bottom of this page for an idea of where to begin your adventure!

Your pulse will take up the rhythm of the land and it's rivers as you come to understand the Naha Dehé and this remote wilderness landscape. This land is much as it has been for thousands of years. There are no roads into the Nahanni National Park and Simpson Air will know the best drop-off point for your trek. Most hiking in the Nahanni is on routes that are not maintained, but you can find out about basic backcountry facilities at key locations in the park from the Nahanni National Park Reserve office. Overnight visitors require registration and de-registration with the park office in Fort Simpson.

Contact Simpson Air to get started on your exciting adventure in this remote winderness.

Fly into the trip of a lifetime, and get ready for the fight. Clear waters sport some of the best fishing in the world. Generally speaking, both Pike (Jackfish) and Pickerel (Walleye) are plentiful in June. Northern Pike and Lake Trout are popular in July and August, and reaching into September. Arctic Grayling can be caught at Little Doctor Lake, while Moose River is quite popular after the spring thaw, around June.

The Northern Lights

Viewing the Aurora Borealis is an unparalleled experience of nature's beauty. Luminous colours dance across a dark sky in an unreal display that leaves you breathless.

Viewing is more frequent at northern latitudes. Remote areas are best as they are not affected by 'light pollution'. Winter, with the long periods of darkness and clear nights, provides many great opportunities for the display. The phenomena occurs near magnetic poles and the majestic dance extends from 80 km to as high as 640 km above the surface of the earth.

You can include this special idea into your stay at the Nahanni Mountain Lodge.
